When Acrobat Stops Being Enough
Acrobat is where most document redaction starts, and for a handful of files a month it is a reasonable answer. Three things change that.
Where It Breaks
Volume. Acrobat is one file, one person, one pass. A records unit with a weekly intake hits a ceiling set by headcount, and the only lever is more people.
Embedded images. Acrobat redacts text. A police report with a booking photo, an insurance file with a vehicle image, a benefits claim with a scanned ID — the photograph is opaque to a text-only tool. The redaction looks complete and is not.
Proof. Acrobat removes content. It does not record which statutory exemption justified the removal, does not print that basis on the released file, and does not report what share of a framework's detection set was caught. When a withholding is appealed, the answer has to be reconstructed from someone's memory.

Beyond Documents
The other reason agencies consolidate: a public-records request is rarely documents alone. Once video, audio and images are in the request, Acrobat covers one quarter of the job and the rest goes somewhere else.

What This Does Not Do
- Documents redact with a solid fill. Blur and pixelate are in development across the PDF, Office and CAD provider set. If you need a blurred document specifically, that is not available today.
- Detection on embedded objects operates on the rendered page, so an object must be visible in the page as rendered.
- A template assumes a stable layout. A document that differs still needs review.
- Acrobat does plenty Redactor does not. This is about redaction, not about replacing a PDF editor.
