How Format Support Works
Three rendering paths run underneath:
The native pipeline
For video, audio and web-native images
ImageMagick
For the long tail of raster formats, which is where most of the 187 image extensions live
A document engine
For office, CAD, email and page-description formats
Video and audio are transcoded to streaming renditions on ingest. Images and documents are rendered for in-browser viewing without the originating application, so a CAD file or an obscure raster format is reviewable by someone who does not have the software that made it.
DICOM is handled as medical imaging rather than as a generic image, preserving study and series structure. It has its own page.
Configuration
The accepted format list is managed per portal, alongside a separate restricted-extension blocklist that refuses types outright. A deployment that should never accept executables says so once.

How many file formats are supported?

Do files need converting before they are ingested?
No. Each format carries its MIME type, content-type classification, rendering engine and file signature, so it is ingested in the form it arrives in. Three rendering paths handle the range: the native pipeline for video, audio and web-native images, ImageMagick for the long tail of raster formats, and a document engine for office, CAD, email and page-description formats.
Are older or unusual formats handled?
The long tail is the reason for the ImageMagick and document engine paths. Footage from decommissioned camera systems and archives going back many years are handled without a separate conversion step.
Is DICOM treated as an image format?
No. DICOM is recognised as a distinct medical-imaging content type rather than converted to a general image format, which is what allows study and series structure to be preserved and the output to remain DICOM.
What comes back out after redaction?
The same format that went in. Redaction produces a new rendition of the original rather than a flattened export, so a PDF stays a PDF and a DICOM study stays a DICOM study.
