Redaction at Public-Sector Scale

Four organizations, and two benchmarks that are not case studies but answer the question people actually ask: does it hold up at scale, and how does it score against alternatives.

Stories

A major county in California Redacted 1.1 million calls in bulk. This is the deployment behind the volume benchmark quoted elsewhere on this site.

A county public safety agency Cut average video release time, which is the metric a records unit is actually measured on.

Georgia Attorney General's Office Manages evidence arriving from 50 law enforcement agencies, in whatever formats those agencies produce.

Suffolk Legal Aid Society Legal aid casework, where the redaction budget is the constraint.

Two Benchmarks

Scale. The Department for Work and Pensions in the UK runs 5,000 users against roughly 4 million pages a year on a single deployment. That is the largest documented deployment and the answer to whether the architecture holds.

Competitive evaluation. In the DWP procurement, VIDIZMO scored 86.1%, against Idox plc at 32.8% and ReadyRedact at 30.7%. A buyer-run evaluation is worth more than a vendor-run comparison, which is why it is the number quoted here.

A Note on What Is Not Here

Redaction customers are disproportionately law enforcement, prosecution and government agencies. A great many of them will not be named, and several of the most interesting deployments are ones we cannot describe at all.

Where a customer is not named here it is usually because they asked not to be, not because the deployment is small.
